While you should consistently be assessing where you are in life in perspective with your life goals and plans, it is easier consider such a topic during the Thanksgiving holidays when we are pushed to do so. Although I am fairly new to the real estate world, I have always had a strong interest in working in such a field. I am personally thankful for the opportunity to begin a job in real estate (even if it is as an entry level blogger) for this reason, however below are the perks that real estate regulars enjoy, and why they have stuck it out with this career.
While there will always exist exceptions to the rules, most people who work in real estate are their own boss (independent contractors). For those of you who never really “got along” with management, this is a great field, because you set your own guidelines for your level of success. Do you want to dream big and pay all your bills this way, or do you want to only have a side hobby? You get to decide for yourself, instead of having someone else do the thinking for you.
Even if you are an entry level or mid level employee, chances are you do not have to be in an office from 9-5 on the daily. Most of the work you do can be consolidated into a couple to a few days a week instead of five to seven days. You have the right to decide if you do your work during the evening, or if you’d like to be an early bird who gets everything out of the way as soon as possible. For this reason having a family is very doable when working in real estate. Also, use vacation time when its convenient for your schedule, not someone else’s.
How many jobs have you had where you do not like the people around you? Perhaps its not that you aren’t a “people person” but rather you and another were dancing to two different songs? Real Estate is one of those rare careers where you get to choose your co-workers, and better yet, your clientele. You are not required by company standards (assuming you are working independently) to keep clients who are rude or who simply cannot be satisfied. That being said, you should still provide exceptional customer service, which goes without saying, but that leads us into our next point…
Even if you’re not a fan of the limelight, everyone loves to be doted upon from time to time, so whether your goal is to brand your whole name so everyone goes to you for the latest real estate details, or to just be a reliable source within your community, you definitely get the chance to show off your people skills and develop a positive review for yourself, not anyone else. Because why give another credit when you do the work? And the work you’ll be doing is positive for said community. When you have the prospect of helping someone out of foreclosure, or relieving them from a property they no longer wish to be responsible of, or finding just the right home for another, its a great feeling. Plus, the better the experience, the better chance you’ll be recommended!
Although not all of these points apply to everyone, they are definitely things to keep in mind when deciding upon a career, and whether or not it is worth your efforts to try out real estate.
