When the time comes to sell your home in San Antonio, one of your biggest payoffs will be the renovations you’ve done. If you’re environmentally or financially conscience, there are plenty of renovations renovations you can perform to have your home use less energy, and save more money as a result. In this weeks iCloseHomes blog, we will be listing some of these renovations.
If you’re looking to sell your home in San Antonio, you already know that the summers can be very hot. This means it’s only natural that we use our thermostats more than we would during the more mild months. However, there are actually a few ways to cut heating and cooling costs in your home that go beyond using your thermostat a little less.
Chances are you may already have one, but aren’t using it, but the good news here is these energy savers start around $40. It’s most energy efficient to set your thermostat to 68 degrees in cold weather, and 78 degrees in warm weather. At these settings, your HVAC (Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning System) system will power off any time your home is within the designated temperature range. While you can do that part with your standard thermostat, a programmable one let’s you kick things up a notch. It allows you to set your thermostat according to your schedule, which saves energy anytime you;’re not normally in the house.
Windows are going to be your homes largest point of thermal transmission. Energy efficient windows will strike the best balance between how much heat is lost in the colder months, or gained during warmer ones for your climate zone. It may not be a great idea to replace all your windows if you weren’t already going to, but if you should happen to already be buying windows, energy efficient ones are generally not much more expensive than a generic window and can pay you dividends on resale.
LED and CFL lght bulbs are going to be the cheapest, easiest to install, and possibly most effective way to conserve energy in your home. While they do tend to cost a little more up front, they can each in their own way, do wonders to reduce your overall home energy consumption. LEDs in particular can last up to 20 times longer than your normal incandescent light bulb, and use 80 percent less energy. If your looking to save a little more money up front, CFLs usually only cost a couple dollars more than your standard incandescent, but come with the downside of having to be properly disposed of.
If you own a home, you have at least two utility bills, electricity, and water, and while electricity usually gets a lot of the focus in talks about green home renovations, there’s a lot we can do to save water as well. There are entire lines of low-flow plumbing fixtures, that focus on using fewer gallons of water per use in your home that can be used with your faucets, showerheads and toilets. These new plumbing fixtures can use as little as half the amount of water that older ones will, and remember, you’re being charged by the gallon.
